The 2010 Mercedes-Benz G-Class, also called G-Wagon, short for “Geländewagen” (Off-Road Vehicle), is probably the Worlds most conservative vehicle. Its exterior has barely changed since its introduction over 30 years ago. Squared body sculpture, for some reason, has fascinated both men and women ever since. It seems that Mercedes-Benz has been afraid to change G- look due to a long running success. Even though 2010 Mercedes-Benz G-Class has not changed much externally, it is enormously advanced internally.
History:
In the early 1970s, German Army considered necessary to develop a light military vehicle. That’s gave birth to Geländewagen. Mercedes-Benz obtained military contracts for the vehicle in the late 1970s and presented a civilian version in 1979. While the G-Wagon was not offered for sale in the United States, it was sold through the 1980s "gray market" for around $150,000. European-spec G-Class was modified to meet USA government's safety and emissions standards. At last, in 2002 the G-Wagon officially came to America. Only Top of the Line model was selected for sale - G500. Later Mercedes-Benz replaced G500 with more powerful G550 and added Supercharged AMG version G55 AMG to its G-Class stable – to satisfy American taste for Horsepower.
Exclusivity:
All G Wagons are hand-assembled (!) in Graz, Austria at an annual production of 4,000 to 6,000 units. G-Class models utilize 3 (!) fully locking differentials. Only few other vehicles sold in United States, like Jeep Wrangler Rubicon and Toyota 80-series Land Cruiser, hold such feature. The body metal thickness is almost twice the size of any normal vehicle. G-Wagons are widely used as military, police and state security units around the World; including the USMC Interim Fast Attack Vehicle (IFAV) which is a customized version of the Mercedes-Benz Geländewagen 290, used by US Marine Corps. G Class is a superior authority of the on-road and off-road capabilities in the SUV World!
2010 Mercedes-Benz G550 vs. G55 AMG:
The main difference is the Powertrain. Although both models feature 5.5 liter V8 engines, the G55 AMG’s engine is supercharged. G550’s engine outputs healthy 382 Horsepower, which seems to be plenty to have, but because you consider G-Wagon to be a Heavyweight due to its massive 5,622 lbs Curb Weight, the “mind-blowing” 500 Horsepower of the Supercharged G55 AMG V8 – makes all the difference in the World! It accelerates G55 AMG from 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 5.4 seconds, while G550 goes from 0 to 60 in 6 seconds. 2010 Mercedes-Benz G55 AMG also comes with bigger AMG wheels. All dimensions of both models and pretty much the rest of all technical aspects are identical. Although, there is a clear difference in power between 2 models, the fuel economy is the same: 11 miles per gallon in the City-drive and 15 MPG on the Highway-drive. 2010 Mercedes-Benz G-Class vs. GL-Class:
GL-Class supposed to be a substitution of G-Class, but it never happened, as GL-Class went on its own. If you are looking for the comfort, effortless ride and space efficiency for 7 Passengers, with the standard electrically folding 3rd row seats – you should get GL-Class. 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class will give you everything and above what you can expect from an SUV. Also it can save you up to $44,000, comparing to the least expensive G-Class. Visit BenzOnly.com
GL-Class page for complete specifications. However, if you like to be different from others, own exclusive and unique masterpiece and possess the hand-built icon of strength and luxury for the off-road supremacy – than 2010 G-Wagon is the only answer!
Bottom Line:
2010 Mercedes-Benz G-Class is not for everybody. It is not: “must have”. Why buy $10,000 Rolex watches, when you can buy a very good quality $300 Citizen watches? What is the reason to spend money on something that you desire, but can live without? If you know the reason, then BenzOnly.com salutes you…
